Mark Twain

The great American writer Mark Twain (nee Samuel Langhorne Clemens) was born on 30 November 1835 at 4:45 in Florida Missouri (Rodden Rating: C; Collector: Rodden) with Jupiter in Cancer and Saturn in Scorpio.

As I've pointed out before, the synastry between a fan and the celebrity is often very telling. I've always loved Mark Twain's writing and I was delighted to discover his Sun is on my descendant, our Moons are in opposition and his Jupiter in Cancer is conjunct my own by just over 1 degree. Wonderful, wonderful synastry!

Mark is well known not only as a writer but as someone who was able to predict the date of his own death. He was famously born during the appearance of Halley's Comet and said he would die when it returned 74 years later.  He did.

Mark's father died at his Jupiter return when he was 11 and he left
Mark Twain at 15, just after his first Saturn opposition
school to become a printer's apprentice shortly afterwards. Jupiter in Cancer children can be difficult to educate because their caring natures are a distraction to the learning process. Parents and teachers often see their compassion as weaknesses and employ disciplinary measures such as isolating them from loved ones until a task is mastered in an effort to "toughen them up". Often this means they just dig their heels in.  Jupiter in Cancer pupils need to find causes to care about and so it is not too unusual that they only take to subjects they truly care about. In Mark's case, this was publishing and a life as a steamboatman.

"The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County", published just after his first Saturn return, was enormously successful and was the beginning of a literary career that would connect him to presidents and royalty. Although he had many literary triumphs, he is best know for 'The Adventures of Tom Sawyer" written in 1876 as Jupiter transited his natal planets in Sagittarius and "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn" written in 1885 as Jupiter opposed natal planets in Aries and transiting Saturn crossed over his natal Jupiter.

Literary success did not prevent financial difficulties. Mark was interested in technology and was a life long fan of Nikola Tesla. Unfortunately his patents were a disaster and led him to having to declare bankruptcy (he eventually paid off all loans even though he was not obligated to do so).

Planetary transits continue after the native has died (check out my article on Margaret Mitchell) and this is also true of Mark Twain. In June 2000, Hollywood actor Paul Newman breathed new life into "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer" by reading the classic as an audio book. The Jupiter-Saturn conjunction Taurus during that time are on Mark's natal North Node. Not only do these two both have natal Saturn in Scorpio but natal Jupiter in opposition along Paul's asc/des axis. Paul is a great choice as a narrator for a Mark Twain story! And it is satisfying to note that the planets for Mark and Paul nicely pull the stellium of planets in the USA chart.
